THE WATERLOO EVENING COURIER, THURSDAY MAY 5, 1910
DEATH SUMMONS ENGINEER HOME
FORMER ILLINOIS CENTRAL EMPLOYE CALLED
Thomas P. McCormick Was With Road Twenty-five Years.
After an illness of locomotor ataxia, with which he had suffered for ten years. Thomas P. McCormick, one of the faithful engineers of the Illinois Central for over twenty-five years, passed away last evening at 6:15 at his home, 339 Saxon street.
Although he had been an invalid for so long, Mr. McCormick had been able to get about the house and yard with the assistance of a cane until three weeks ago, when complications of dropsy and heart trouble, which developed during the past two months, made activity an exertion. Even when in pain he was ever cheerful and uncomplaining and to the last he spoke hopefully to his wife and children and always looked on the bright side of life's picture. Many of his former fellow employees and his many other friends will be grieved to hear this beloved friend is no more.
Decedent was born in Dubuque March 18, 1859, and was thus just 51 years old when death came to him. He was married in Dubuque Sept. 16, 1885, to Hattie Whippo, and she, with two daughters and three sons, all at home, are left to mourn a loving husband and father.
The daughters, Lyle and Irene, are both clerks with the James Black Dry Goods company; the oldest son, Harry, is in the Illinois Central shops, and the other children are Albert and Franklin, the baby son. The mother of the decedent, Mrs. Mary Ellen Lavin, resides at Dubuque, together with one brother and one sister, Henry and Sarah McCormick. There are also two step-brothers and one step-sister, these being Mrs. C. A. Kind and James F. Lavin, Dubuque, and M. Lavin, Columbus, Kan.
Began Railroad Service in 1886
Mr. McCormick commenced his service with the Illinois Central in this city, to which he moved in 1886, soon after his marriage. He advanced steadily through faithful and efficient work and for the twenty-five years was one of the road's valued employee. His run was on the Dubuque division, between Waterloo and Dubuque. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and also of the A.O.U.W. Since he had given up active railroading he had within recent years complied a little book which was considered very valuable to trainmen, its title being "Gems of Knowledge for Engine and Train Men."
Funeral on Saturday.
The funeral will be held from the home on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and will be conducted by Rev. H. W. Reherd of the First Presbyterian church, of which the family are members. The burial will be to Fairview cemetery.
