U.S. Congressman. Moving to Indiana, in 1838, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Rushville. He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, (1847-49) and moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1857. There he engaged in the real estate business and was judge of the fourth judicial district, (1859-62). In 1863, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth, Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Sioux City, in 1871 and served as its president until his death at age 60.
