Son of George Henry Gilbert and Mary Blackwell

Married Henrietta Noble, 10 Feb 1862, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah

Children - Jane Ann Gilbert, Mary Louise Gilbert, Leonora Tryphena Gilbert, George Henry Gilbert, Priscilla Eliza Gilbert, William Goodwin Gilbert, Aquilla Noble Gilbert, Edwin Blackwell Gilbert

History - The Gilbert family were religious people and belonged to the Wesleyan Church. When George was two years old the family moved to South Wales, where the father could get better work at his trade as a machinist. Where there the Gospel was taught by the missonaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They soon believed in its truths and joined the church.

They sailed from Liverpool, England 10 Jan 1852 on the ship "Kennebec". They left Kanesville, Iowa, June 1852 in the Abraham O. Smoot Company and arrived in Salt Lake City, 3 Sep 1852. The father went to Iron county to find work but was not successful. He ran a farm in Millcreek for a while then moved his family to Brigham City, Utah.

George was in Echo Canyon during the fall and winter of 1857 with the men sent to meet Johnston's Army. When the Saints moved south he was left with others to guard Brigham City.

In the spring of 1860 several teams and wagons were sent back to Florence, Nebraska to get provisions, and as a test rip to see if the journey could be made in one season. There he met Henrietta Noble and her sister, who did the cooking for the teamsters. All of the men greatly enjoyed the songs these girls sang by the campfire in the evening.

He eas sent back to Winter Quarters seven times to help companies complete their journey. He was called to be a minute man for several years, and as a guard to escort dissatisfied Saints on their way to California. He herded horses and sheep near Brigham City. He was one of the six men sent by Brigham Young to hold land for the incoming Saints. For this he was given a plot of land on which he built a one-room house, which was put together with wooden pegs.

He sent for Henrietta and they were married. They lived in this small house for many years. They loved music and sang together for various functions all of their lives. George died from a stroke while kneeling at his bed in the attitude of prayer.
