Mary Avonelle Johnston, 77, formerly of Grampian, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, at the home of her son, Darren Johnston, after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 30, 1929, in Clearfield, she was the daughter of James Boyd and Beulah Mae (McKendrick) Hatten.

She retired from Penn-Grampian Elementary School as a cook and had also done babysitting and care giving in the Grampian/Curwensville area.

She was affiliated with the Grampian Church of God and the St. John's United Church of Christ in Boalsburg. She was also a member of the Retired School Employees Association.

An Nov. 20, 1948, she wed Mirl William Johnston, who preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1000. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Delmont Hatten.

Surviving are four children, James W. Johnston and his wife, Nancy, of Grampian, Kathryn L. Mandetta and her husband, Donald, of Boalsburg, Daniel M. Johnston and his wife Maureen of Morrisdale and Darren L. Johnston and his wife, Lanette, of Port Matilda. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, one great-grandson and a brother, Bernard Duane Hatten of Curwensville.
