Hiram Kite was Captain of Company H of the 97th Virginia Militia. It became part of the Confederate States Army. He had married Margaret Caroline Miller in 1843. The Miller-Kite House in Elkton was Stonewall Jackson's headquarters the last ten days of April of 1862. The house is extant at 310 East Rockingham Street. It now serves as a museum.
