John never married. He enlisted on 27 December 1864 at Boston, Massachusetts as a private for four years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was the son of William Gowen and Nancy Drew, who was born 6 Nov 1818 and died 17 Jan 1896. She was born in Newfield,York,Maine, and burial is at Saco, Maine. COD: Scarlet fever.

The family is recorded on the 1850 census
at Newfield, York, Maine.

In 1864 Nancy filed an affidavit stating
that William abandoned his family, failing
to provide support for them.
In 1870 Nancy is recorded on the census
at Sanford, York, Maine with her children.

On 25 September 1886 Nancy married 2nd
at Newmarket, Rockingham, New Hampshire
to George K. HORN.
