David B. Steele
Pioneer Passes Away
"The death of David Steele, an old and well-known resident of this community, occurred on Thursday last at his home near town. He was 87 years of age and the following details of his life are furnished us by a friend of the family:
David B. Steele was born in Orange County, N.Y., April 19th, 1820, afterwards moving with his parents to Philadelphia, and then to Adamsville, Crawford County, Pa. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Ralston, March 27th, 1845. They came to Iowa in 1864 and first settled on what was known as the Old Daily place in Union Prairie Township, and later lived in a farm near the stone school house in West Ridge, but for thirty-two years resided on the present homestead. To them were born nine children, five girls and four boys, J. Taylor, Mrs. Nancy Jones, Mrs. Hannah Clark, Robert, Nelson, and Maggie, all of Waukon; James H, of Lake Andes, S.D., Mrs. Martha Moore and Mrs. Mary Richardson of White, S.D., all of whom with his wife survive him.
Two years ago the sixtieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Steele was observed in the rooms of the Presbyterian Church, and it was then noted as a remarkable event, especially as the large family-himself, wife and nine children- had for so many years remained unbroken, but another two years passed before he was called home, the first break in the loving home circle.
At the time of death he was eighty-seven years, one month and five days old. The married life of Mr. and Mrs., Steele extended over sixty-two years, Mr. Steele was a good man as husband, father, member of the community and citizen. For many years he has been a member of the Presbyterian church and his daily life won the confidence, esteem and love of all who became acquainted with him."
