The original cemetery was located in the town of Freeport opposite the Presbyterian Church, next to an old schoolhouse. The first white person buried within the limits of Freeport was Miss Fails, who had drowned while crossing Buffalo Creek in 1794. Many of the pioneers of the town were buried in this cemetery. Nearly 200 graves were later moved from the old cemetery in town into Freeport Cemetery.
Initial plans had Freeport Cemetery and Oak Ridge Cemetery laid out at the same time on adjoining land, treating them as separate cemeteries. For some reason Oak Ridge Cemetery never became independent and all care and finances of the two have always been together. Most people don't know the Oak Ridge name exists. Oak Ridge Cemetery would consist of sections I and K and part of G (all of which are on the upper hill at the back of the combined cemetery).
St. Mary's Cemetery, connected with the Roman Catholic Church of Freeport, is located adjacent to Freeport Cemetery, but is a separate entity.
