On 4 June 1804 the German Lutheran and German Reformed congregations of Springfield Twp voted to build a joint meeting house on 1 acres of land belonging to Peter and Christina Messerle. In 1807 there sere at least three burials: Jacob Whittenbergers and wife Catherine, Eva Mosser, widow of Michael and Peter Musser and wife Margaret.(see listings for dates)
Old Springfield Cemetery is one of the oldest graveyards in the county and a great many hours have been devoted to making the record of its stones as accurate as possible. The cemetery was first copied in the fall of 1971 and in 1976. about fifty loose stones piled under the old pines were unearthed and painstakingly chalked and deciphered. By 1982 many of the fallen stones had been erected again, so the cemetery was completely recpopied in the correct order; all inscriptions were reread and compared, further efforts were made to decipher all worn and illegible stones; and the many German stones were copied verbatim. In 1994 the order of the stones was rechecked, as well as some discrepancies with other records, and a last effort was made on some of the illegibles. But sadly, there are sill many question marks!
