Mail genealogy requests to 21400 chargrin blvd, beachwood, ohio 44122
According to cemetery records there were 17,935 interments. Of the original interments at the Ontario Street Burial Ground removed to Erie Street Cemetery and burials for the years 1827-1839, information only exists from marked graves being recorded or other outside sources. Between 1904 and 1924 there were several thousand removals to other local cemeteries (predominantly Highland Park Cemetery) due to threatened development of the property. The cemetery steadily declined in use after that and since 1984 the cemetery has been inactive.
There are two sets of records for the cemetery interments. The first, and original, typed records are those for the City of Cleveland Department of Parks and Public Property Division of Cemeteries. These note the lots at Erie Street where people are buried and those who were transferred. The second handwritten set is from the City of Cleveland Department of Police, Division of Public Health are copies of the originals and are not as detailed as the originals. The Police records contain numerous errors including the use of burial date as the death date, listing separate entries for people with surname spelling variants, and do not differentiate which remains were being sent to the City Vault which was located at the cemetery. Many of these do not have a burial location at Erie Street as they were removed to another cemetery.
