Oakwood Cemetery a/k/a South Morton Cemetery is located within the city of Okmulgee at 13th & South Morton. It is a small burial ground with tall trees. It has no gate or main entrance, and is not fenced in. The cemetery lies in an older residential area with the YMCA adjoining one end. Very few of the tombstones remain standing upright and most are broken. I originally thought the damage was due to vandals and mother nature, but found another reason: One day in July 2005 when I arrived to take photos, a city/county employee riding a small tractor with a large mower attached sped through the cemetery cutting the tall grass. He repeatedly ran over and into tombstones. Clank, clank could clearly be heard a half block away as we waited in our cars. The two stone markers in this photo face north and may have held a gate at one time. A busy street is a few feet in front of the stone markers.

This lovely marker from the 1800's is representative of how this cemetery may have once looked. This photo was shot in October 2004 as the photographer faced east.

This is the back-side of the cemetery. It'ss a bunch of headstones scattered on this hill. There are houses on the left, a YMCA on the right.Behind me is a parking lot, walking track & play area.
