The cemetery is located on the south side of Pflanz Avenue, the north side of Bank Street, and the west side of N 35th Street. The cemetery is about 8.6 acres in size, has 8,368 plots, and is at capacity. The cemetery is managed by Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation.
A deed to the city of Portland was entered in 1847 by John Rowan for four acres of land to be used as a family graveyard. The city of Louisville acquired possession of the cemetery in 1852 when Portland was annexed by Louisville.
