Pioneer Cemetery at the foot of Dolores Mountain was first used probably in the early 1870's. By 1876, the property belonged to black ex-soldier Archie Smith and later was bought by EH Carlton. There does not seem to have been any official designation of this area as a cemetery; it was simply used by the whole town, Catholic and Protestant, Anglo and Hispanic. Today only a few stone markers remain. An interesting, but now unmarked burials in the old cemetery include Texas Ranger "Red" Bingham killed by Jesse Evans, murdered Horace Powe, the boot hill graves of the Frier brothers, Dolores and the seven Bentley children who died in a diphtheria epidemic in 1891 within two weeks of each other. On March 24, 1914 when the Mexican Cemetery, now known as Saint Joseph's Cemetery was created, the Pioneer Cemetery became disused.
