The Wolfsburg burial forest has been part of the municipal cemeteries in Wolfsburg since September 1, 2020. In a natural environment and without maintenance effort for the bereaved, anyone can be interred there. The forest itself is open to everyone regardless of denomination or origin.
Due to burials taking place in a forest clearing, they are carried out sequentially. Consequently, burial plots cannot be purchased in advance, resembling a burial "under the green meadow." Nevertheless, interments in the burial forest are not anonymous. A memorial service can be held at the place of worship, and the urn can be accompanied during its interment in the presence of family and friends.
The period of rest and use is 20 years. Urns must be fully biodegradable without residue within the resting period. Any form of grave care, decoration, or alteration is prohibited, including placing urn decorations on the burial site.
There is an option to attach a memorial plaque in the shape of a beech leaf to a memorial stone. The plaque contains the first and last name of the deceased person, and optionally, the year of birth and death. However, this does not directly label the burial site. The beech leaf is placed near the interment site.
Memorial services can take place in the pavilion available in the burial forest.
