Grave Site 1 (38CH2772 / 0678) is the African American Elliott family cemetery that dates from ca. 1902 to 1934. Members of the Elliott family owned the property from 1894 to 2020. Grave Site 1 is located near the center of the project tract approximately 290 m east-northeast of the entrance gate. The cemetery measures 40-by-25 m with its long axis oriented to 125° azimuth (A) true north (TN) and covers 830 m2 (0.21 acre). Grave Site 1 extends across a small ridgetop that slopes down from 3.7 to 2.7 m amsl generally from southwest to northeast. A swamp tributary of Oyster House Creek extends between Grave Sites 1 and 2 and drains from south to north. In March 2024, vegetation across the cemetery consisted of mature hardwoods and pines, with a dense understory and heavy ground cover. Brockington archaeologists had to clear significant portions of the cemetery to permit mapping and GPR survey. We identified nine graves at Grave Site 1, including three marked graves (Graves 1-3), four unmarked graves (Graves 4-7), and two distinct GPR anomalies (Graves 8 and 9). The three known interments are clustered together and date from 1902 to 1934.
