Add PhotosThe 'Indian Burying Ground' or 'Indian Burial Ground' was at what became Dansville, in Livingston County, New York. (No stones or graves anymore.) The Lutheran Church is located at what was the center of the burial ground. The site at some point was described as being 2 or 3 acres. Main Street (in Dansville) cuts through the old 'Indian Burial Ground'. Several people buried there were found and moved after a time, although some are possibly still there. A chief of the Senecas was buried there, now apparently underneath the Lutheran Church. There was a pile of small stones brought from a hill a mile away for the chief's monument. It was seen by the settlers and pioneers, but the stones were then made into the foundation of the early Lutheran church's walls at the site. (Not clear exactly who was buried there specifically, for now.)
It is referenced in multiple sources. Mentioned on page 18 in the book titled, "Dansville: Historical, Biographical, Descriptive", edited by A. O. Bunnell, published in 1902.
Additionally mentioned in "Bulletin of the State Museum of New York: Aboriginal Occupation of New York", No. 32, Vol. 7, page 85, by William M. Beauchamp, published in 1900.
Also in mentioned in "New York State Museum Bulletin", Issue 237, page 604, published in 1922.
Lastly mentioned on page 77 of the book titled, "History of Livingston County, New York" From Its Earliest Traditions to the Present Together with Early Town Sketches", by Lockwood R. Doty, published in 1905.
