St. Martin is the Catholic parish church of Garmisch in the Upper Bavarian market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the old parish church St. Martin had become too small. Therefore, the people of Garmisch, along with their pastor Marquard Schmid, decided to build a new church in the area of the new settlement core. They chose Niklasanger and dismantled the existing church there. The Wessobrunn master builder and stucco artist Josef Schmuzer was chosen for the construction. He erected a spacious nave with four bays, measuring 44 meters in length and 14.5 meters in width. The eastern part suggests a transept with the side chapels. On Bohemian caps, articulated by double-arched pilasters, Matthäus Günther painted scenes from the life of St. Martin in six fields. The church was consecrated on September 23, 1734.
The examination of the five altars takes us through three style epochs: In the center of the Baroque high altar, we find the depiction of the division of St. Martin's cloak (after A. van Dyck) by Martin Speer. The expressive apostle princes and the trumpeting angels on the entablature are the work of the sculptor Anton Sturm. The side altars, created only 20 years later, already shine in the Rococo style, as does the pulpit, which was designed in 1782 by the Tyrolean sculptor Franz Hosp. The altars in the side chapels, on the other hand, represent the simplicity of Neoclassicism.
In 1958, the tower received an 8-bell bronze peal in "A flat" from the Erding foundry Czudnochowsky. In 1978, organ builder Gerhard Schmid integrated a baroque-style organ with 29 registers into the historical structure. During the renovation that began in 2009, the church was covered with larch shingles.
