The collegiate church was constructed as a three-aisled column basilica with nine bays, a three-aisled crypt, apse, and separated crossing during the tenure of Magdeburg‘s Archbishop Werner von Steußlingen (1063 to 1678), making it one of the most modern monastery complexes of its time.
It was only around 50 years after Archbishop Werner's death that a new chapter in the construction history began with the Premonstratensians under Norbert of Xanten. The construction of the west tower with its attached round towers can be confirmed to have occurred shortly after. After Norbert's relatively sudden death in 1134, his closest confidant and disciple, Evermod, continued the construction work and brought it to completion.
In summary, it can be noted that there were three major construction phases for the Convent of Our Lady and the collegiate church, each of which saw the creation of high-quality architecture reflecting a particular aspiration. During the construction phase under Archbishop Werner from 1070, the focus was on stabilizing imperial political power, and it was fashionable to draw inspiration from Italian motifs that were reflected throughout the Holy Roman Empire and beyond. Under Norbert of Xanten and his first disciple and successor, Evermod, the idea of presenting a new order as an expression of monastic power took center stage. While the south portal still shows Italian influences, the support structures in the nave and the highly-columned chapel clearly demonstrate a more modern influence. The early Gothic rib vault that now characterizes the appearance was inserted into the existing Romanesque building around 1220 to 1230.
