The cemetery is located on Gum Tree Road in Chanceford Township behind a residence on private property. Consisting of only fieldstones located on the
edge of the yard and in the woods, the cemetery is no longer maintained. Many of the fieldstones were displaced several years ago by loggers removing trees on a nearby property. Unaware of the cemetery's existence the logging equipment drove across the cemetery while dragging trees until stopped by the property owner, but the damage had been done.
The dwelling at this location on the 1860 York County Atlas
is shown as D. Bruce, and on the 1876 Atlas as B. Ambrose. It was a log house on a stone foundation built near the roadway and was in partially in existence in the 1970s.
The GPS co-ordinates are 39.8943 N, -076.4162 W, 39/53/39.49
N, 76/24/58.17 W.
David Bruce was born about 1805 in Maryland. In 1860 David was working as a laborer when the family was living in Chanceford Township.
In 1870 the family was living in Peach Bottom Township where David was a
farmer. David apparently died before 1880 as the census for Peach Bottom Township shows his wife Rachel as a widow.
A 1975 newspaper article in the Southern York County Free Press had the following information:
"A Part of History" by D. Miriam Smith
BROGUE – A Negro cemetery, located on the Gum Tree Road R.D.
1, Brogue, Chanceford Township, (York County) provides a story for many
historians. Approximately 50 negro graves are scattered throughout the
wooded area, marked by field stones with writings now faded into oblivion (one visible marked Child). Any lettering was cut in stones with a broad axe.
This property was once owned by Rev. David Bruce, a negro preacher, who lived in the log cabin and held services there. The story is told that the last burial probably much more than 100 years ago was of a little girl wearing a red dress or shawl who went to bring in the cows and was gored by a bull. At that time Rev. David Bruce sold the property to Benjamin A. Ambrose March 24, 1869. Mr. Ambrose paid $2.50 according to the deed to have the property
recorded at the Court House.
There are those who remember Rev. Murray, son-in-law of Rev. David Bruce, who, on special occasions preached at the Bethel United Methodist
Church near Shenk's Ferry, and while in this area spent the night at the
Ambrose home. This old home place carries many memories!
Mrs. Sarah Ellen Hake, Mrs. Ambrose's daughter, who is 98
years of age, her son Robert still resides on this property, as well as a
married daughter, Mrs. Fern Anderson, who lives next door.
Mrs. Hake says, "I remember as a little girl how beautiful the hillside was with wild flowers on the graves and no one was permitted to molest or walk near the graves, as they were held in reverence then as they are today".
