Add PhotosThe Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded on April 4, 1792, when merchant Joseph Miller and his wife Elizabeth conveyed lot of land in what was then the village of Frankford, Oxford Township, Philadelphia County, to a group of German farmers to erect a schoolhouse and a house of religious worship.
Four years later, in 1796, the Milllers conveyed an additional lot of land to the church for a burial ground. Records of the church and burial ground prior to 1854 are scant, but the burial ground continued at this location after the consolidation of Frankford Borough and Oxford Township into the City of Philadelphia that year.
To better serve Frankford's German community, a new lot of land was purchased at Tackawanna and Plum Streets and a new church erected in 1868; the burial ground was disposed of around the same time.
In 1974, the church moved to the Somerton neighborhood where it remains to this day.
The Joseph Deni Recreation center occupies the site of the old burial ground.
