Add PhotosOn February 5, 1916, Archbishop Prendergast established a new parish in the Borough of Collingdale and appointed Reverend Otho C. Gromoll as its founding pastor. The first Mass was offered on Sunday, February 13, 1916 in the hall of Collingdale Fire Co. No. 1.
On March 19, 1916, ground-breaking ceremonies for the new combination church and school building took place. On the following Christmas Day, Mass was celebrated for the first time in the unfinished building. The church complex was later expanded with the addition of a larger school building and a convent, and a new, larger church and rectory were dedicated in January 1956.
In addition to the church, Father Gromoll commissioned the construction of a stone grotto in the convent gardens as a shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes, and it is here that he is entombed in a crypt.
Father Gromoll is the only interment on these grounds, which lie north of the former school building which has been converted to senior apartments.
