The Market Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is a Lutheran church located in the center of the Old Town of Goslar. It serves as the council and main parish church of the city and is named after the saints Cosmas and Damian.
The Market Church ("ecclesia forensis") is first mentioned in a document in the year 1151. However, the origins of the current church building date back to the 11th century, where there must have already been a predecessor structure. This previous building was dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra and was likely a Romanesque, three-aisled basilica with a transept and a crossing.
The church houses a significant late Romanesque cycle of windows depicting scenes from the lives of St Cosmas and Damian. It is a masterpiece of German stained glass art and is the oldest preserved cycle depicting the lives of these two saints. The windows were created around the year 1250.
The beginnings of the Market Church Library cannot be precisely dated, but it was established before 1530. The library currently holds approximately 4,000 works, with a focus on theological literature, as well as an archive of 1,200 hymnals. Notably, the collection is distinguished by its extensive holdings of Reformation writings, which came to Goslar as a gift from the Halberstadt cleric Andreas Gronewalt around 1535, and its collection of 115 incunabula.
