Add PhotosOn January 15, 1817, the Combined Sabbath School Association of the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia was chartered. Shortly thereafter, the Association purchased a triangular lot on Brinton Street (now Howard Street) and Hope Alley (now Hope Street) from Mary Penn in August, 1818, and erected a house of worship and established a burial ground there. On city death certificates, the ground was frequently abbreviated "CSSANL" and "Combined SS Society."
An 1824 Philadelphia directory described the grounds as containing frame building occasionally used as a place of worship for those adhering to the Presbyterian doctrine; the presence of the mission church and cemetery together causing it to be listed as the "Combined Mission-House and Burial-Ground." That same year, the Combined Sabbath School Association Association reported operating five Sunday schools across the Northern Liberties and Kensington District.
In January, 1844 the Association sought to divest itself of the burial ground, and following a special act of legislature passed in April, 1846, it was subsequently conveyed to the Salem German Reformed Congregation in the Northern Liberties, which used it for a time, perhaps to supplement their own burial ground.
In April 1853, a special act of legislature allowed the church to sell this burial ground and and reinter those buried on the ground in "some burial ground in the county of Philadelphia."
