McComas Family Cemetery
Barboursville, Cabell County, West Virginia, USA
The cemetery was located in the vicinity of present day St. Andrews Drive and Turnberry Point.
The cemetery was destroyed in 1925 when a tenant removed all the gravestones, plowed the land and planted tobacco.
According to 1927 affidavits, W. R. Rayburn stated that Thomas Porter farmed a cemetery hill, known as the William McComas Cemetery, around and over the graves of said cemetery in the year 1925. One of the graves in said cemetery was fenced with a board fence. The fence was destroyed by Thomas Porter, plowed up and planted in tobacco. Thomas Porter knew by his own knowledge that this was a cemetery at this time. Willis Reynolds had a child buried in the McComas cemetery, which grave was destroyed by Porter.
Mildred L. Henderson stated that she found the tombstone of her grandmother, Mildred (Ward) McComas, and had it carried to her car. It was taken from a pile of broken stones, we never found grandfather William McComas' tombstone or any part of it.
Thomas Porter stated that he was authorized by Henry Miller, who at that time was agent for W. E. Deegans (who had the McComas farm rented for a period of 20 years), to farm the McComas cemetery, in Cabell County, West Virginia. The said Thomas Porter cleared the cemetery, piling the monuments in a pile and farmed the ground in tobacco and gave Henry Miller one third of the money received from the tobacco crop.
It was said that the cemetery also contained the graves of slaves of William McComas.
