Add PhotosPrior to the start of the America Revolution, Edward W. Heston, whose father had arrived on the continent in 1784, settled in what was then Blockley Township in the County of Philadelphia. Later, after serving as a Colonel in the American Revolution, he founded the village of Hestonville on the Mill Creek, on 100 acres of the family "plantation" at the junction of the Lancaster and Old Lancaster road, around the Columbus Tavern. Later, the West Philadelphia Railroad was run through the village at this point at what would later become 52nd Street Station.
After Heston's death in 1824, he was buried in the small family burial ground he set aside for himself and his family on the property, which was subsequently divided among his second wife and children.
As more and more land was sold for development in the popular village and passed out of the family, the small burying ground became too lucrative to hold on to. On February 24, 1851, the the family's remains were removed to Woodlands Cemetery.
