Add PhotosThis is the cemetery that was used by the early settlers in the Washington area, which is also commonly called Old Washington. Nath & Judy Winfield documented this cemetery in 1965 and recorded the information in their book Cemetery Records of Washington County, Texas 1826-1960. When the Washington County Genealogical Society began entering the burials from that book to Findagrave, we simply named the cemetery Washington Cemetery. However, there is another Washington Cemetery which is between the old cemetery and the public road. So other burials began being entered in the cemetery we had created on Findagrave. These are two separate cemeteries. The original one is described in the Winfield book as: "This cemetery, on the outskirts of the town of Washington is an unkept jungle surrounded by the remains of a barbed wire fence. Within its confines are the remains of some of Washington County's oldest and best families. Except for one interment this old cemetery has been forgotten for several generations."
WCGS feels that it is appropriate to separate the old historical cemetery from the later established Washington Cemetery next to it. So those memorials listed in the Winfield book are being moved to this Findagrave cemetery Washington Historical Cemetery.
