Add PhotosIn addition to the pioneer cemetery on SE-18-18-20-W1, the people of Sandy Lake had another early cemetery located on the east side of SE-04-18-20(-W1). This piece of land was donated by the late Tom Warwaruk, but was never registered. Records state that the first burial was in 1908 and the last was in 1967.
However, when the Holy Ghost Catholic Cemetery (New) was established in 1920 and the Municipal Cemetery in 1930, this cemetery was no longer or only rarely used and years later, it was neglected to the extent that trees had grown all through the place.
In 1965 through the efforts of some residents, it was restored. They were able to receive a grant, plus a canvas was made of the families who had members of their family buried. The Committee was able to complete their job. A title for this plot (was secured) from the then-current owner Raymond Zachary.
The trees were cleared, land worked into summer fallow, and the land was levelled between the tombstones with a garden tiller. A year later grass was sown and a steel fence was erected. (A private caretaker) cares for the plot now.
A large monument was erected with the names of the deceased inscribed. Inscribed on a small white marble tombstone are the names of members of the Wilibnisky family. After completion of the works, Father Kulak blessed the monument in September 1965.

As noted above, a part of the town's story and those of its inhabitants from the early days of European settlement through roughly 1984 is told in the volume "Sandy Lake – Our Roots -- A History of Sandy Lake and District, 1984", especially on page 23. A free digital version of this and many other Manitoba local history books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections. There is also a list of such books organized by district and town name on the Manitoba Historical Society's website on their page entitled "Finding Aid: Manitoba Local History Books".
A list of burials in this cemetery is available from the Manitoba Genealogical Society (reference #0336), transcribed by a member or members in 1995. Also available to MGS members is a searchable online database named the "MGS Manitoba Name Index" (or MANI). Some additional information is contained in the 1996 MGS publication "Carved in Stone: Manitoba Cemeteries and Burial Sites" (revised edition, Special Projects Publication, 106 pages).
