Franciscan Abbey
Also known as The Friary
Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland
The Franciscan Abbey in Clonmel was established in 1269. Its grounds extended from Mitchel Street down to the River Suir, and from Sarsfield Street to Nelson Street. In 1543, a portion of the abbey and its possessions in Newtown were granted to the sovereign and commonalty of Clonmel, and the rest of the possessions were given to the Earl of Ormonde. The church was afterward used as a meeting house by non-conforming Protestants. In 1827 the Franciscans obtained a lease of the remaining portion of the abbey, and in 1866 the church was rebuilt in a manner that destroyed many traces of its original architecture. Of the ancient abbey, the parts remaining in the existing church are the tower and the northern wall of the choir. The ancient nave crossed present Abbey-street to the ancient choir.
