Add PhotosThe George Chandler Mission Church was organized in the Kensington district in 1872 as a Sunday school mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Kensington. In 1872, the growing church bought a parcel of land and constructed a church building at the corner of Cedar and Cumberland Streets. But the congregation rapidly dwindled and was dissolved in 1879.
In the summer of 1881 it was reorganized and reestablished at the same location. Its name was changed to "Chandler Memorial" in 1883 and again in 1885 to "Beacon." Following the rapid expansion of the Kensington neighborhood, the congregation built a new building in 1886 west of the original structure. Hurricane Hazel in 1955 damaged the main church building beyond repair, and the congregation moved into the fellowship hall, set back from Cumberland Street. The church was dissolved in 2011. Today it is home to a church known simply as "Beacon."
This large 1886 building with its large cupola also contained a receiving vault for members. It was used to temporarily hold the remains of members that were being buried at other cemeteries, or when the ground was too frozen to open a grave. Many burials listed in obituaries and records as being made here were most likely intended to be nothing more than temporary, and most if not all final interments occurred elsewhere.
