Add PhotosJonathan K. T. Smith, in his book on African American Cemeteries in Crockett Co., calls this the Forgotten Name Cemetery. The following are his remarks from the book.
"Mr. Fred Colvett, in the eight decade of his age, remembered that years ago there was a tombstone here for a black lady, a school teacher. This tombstone was not found even though a diligent search was made to locate it. Mr. Colvett also remembered that some 70-80 years ago ADDIE RAY and her daughter, RUTH RAY (a handicapped person) were buried here. Several cedars mark the burial site and there is at least one sunken grave here".
According to Jenny Gordon, Addie Ray was ADDIE RAY PERRY married to CICERO PERRY, and Ruth was RUTH RAY PERRY. She was deaf. JOE ELLIOT PERRY, who died at the Alamo Nursing Home, June 23, 1992, was her brother.
In March, 2001, Mark and Natalie Huntley visited this area, and asked about the location of the cemetery. We were told by Sam Reece, who lives near the property that the cemetery is on, that this was the cemetery for the servants (former slaves) of the Epperson farm, which is across the road from this property. Mr. Reece told us that the servants dug the dirt from the area where the cemetery is located, to make bricks for the Epperson house. Mr. Epperson then gave them the land to use as a cemetery. According to Mr. Reece, Mr. Epperson is buried in the Quincy Cemetery. A check of the property records or wills for Gibson County, which was where this area was originally located, may produce further information as to whom may be buried here.
In July 2002, Kim Raines and her Father, Dewayne Harden, visited the cemetery, but it was very badly overgrown, and no stones could be found. Kim will return at a later date, once the foliage has died back, to see what can be found.
