The Crab Orchard Cemetery is on private land. There are said to be two gravestone memorial markers place here. One for LEWIS CORDER, a Revolutionary War Soldier and JOHN CORDER, a Black Hawk War Soldier.
These are both said to have been place here by Tony Loveless, during the 1930's. It is in question as to whether or not Lewis Corder, was actually residing in Williamson County, Illinois, during that timeframe. OF NOTE: Williamson County did not become a county until 1939, when it was divided from what was Franklin County, Illinois. at that time.
From extensive research from local historian, there were notes found by a Nannie Parks, that state there were two stones placed by a large tree within the village of Crab Orchard. This Village is located at the beginning of where Crab Orchard Creek begins to flow westward across the county. These memorials are presently located in what was once the CRAB ORCHARD BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY presently, which are both incorrect placements of these memorials. The Crab Orchard Baptist Church was located on the banks of the Crab Orchard Creek and was founded in the year of our Lord 1850, but ceased to exist due to the development of the Crab Orchard Ammunition Plant during the World War II, and today is on land of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
Many researchers within the Williamson County, Illinois, region confuse the Village of Crab Orchard, located in Crab Orchard Township, Williamson County, with the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge which encompasses West Marion, Grassy and portions Carterville and Southern Townships, within Williamson County, Illinois.
