Add PhotosMethodism in the Kensington section of Philadelphia traces its origin to a split that occurred in Saint George's Church in 1801. That year, about 60 members of the church withdrew to form what later became the Union Methodist Episcopal Church a few blocks away on Fourth Street. The dissidents organized themselves into classes, one of which consisted of members who lived in the then-thinly-settled village of Kensington. In 1805, land was acquired and a brick meeting house was erected on Queen (later Richmond) Street. Known as the Kensington Methodist Episcopal Church, it became known more popularly as the "Old Brick" church.
Burials were made in the churchyard until 1826, when the congregation purchased a lot at the Hanover Street Burial Grounds for $700 and removed many interments there. This cemetery was in turn closed in 1922 and bodies were removed to Forest Hills Cemetery to a mass grave with a single marker. Burial records for the church were found in 2010 in a sealed safe at the church.
In 1853 a new structure was erected on the same site and dedicated in May 1854. Though many burials were moved to Hanover, intact burials have been reported in this second church's basement.
