Brookside Cemetery is a defunct family cemetery comprising about one
acre located at the end of an unpaved lane about 40 yards off Barkley Road in the SW4 of the NE4 of Section 33 of Tuscola Township between Barkley Road and Perry Creek. At the end of the lane a steep hill leads to this little cemetery that borders the sandy Perry Creek basin. On April 28, 1880 this plot of land was purchased for $20.00 by the widow Elizabeth (Gazard/Gasser) Stevens (1797-1882) of Tuscola Township from John Gotwalt (1810-1888) and his wife Maria
Oberholser (1813-1891) of Williamsville, Erie County, New York. The cemetery location was chosen because of its proximity to Elizabeth Stevens' Section 33 homestead, which she had inherited from her sister Eleanor (Gasser) Dafter several years earlier.
In her will dated April 6, 1882, Elizabeth Stevens granted seven of her eight living children equal shares in her estate and equal interest in all the unsold lots in Brookside Cemetery. Elizabeth passed away on July 14, 1882 and, like her sister Eleanor Dafter and some other family members, was buried in Brookside Cemetery.
Today, with Elizabeth Stevens' descendants widespread and the forces of nature at work, this little cemetery has slipped into neglect and near-oblivion. Dead vegetation, brush, thickets, and overhanging trees make access difficult. The last few grave markers that had weathered the years were vandalized in the early 1970s. The others may have eroded or may be embedded in the topsoil and debris that has accumulated over the years.
