Add PhotosThe first known survey of this cemetery was done by noted genealogist Dr. Allan E. Marble on June 18, 1972. Per his usual procedure, he did not give the cemetery a name but instead assigned it an identifying number. For this cemetery, the number was 115. He recorded the location as Granville Centre
At a later date, Genweb volunteers transcribed Dr. Marble's survey notes and made them available online at Rootsweb. At that time, the volunteers named it "Gilliatt Cemetery" but, in the cemetery index, they listed the name simply as "Gilliatt". They recorded the location as Granville Centre.
Dr. Marble transcribed 2 headstones containing 2 inscriptions. The oldest identifiable stone is from 1818. His notation reads: "Stones on ground."
Within two years of Dr. Marble's survey, the remains of William Gilliatt and his wife, Lydia, were disinterred and reinterred at Wadeville Cemetery in Granville Centre. Their two headstones were set erect, side by side, in their new home. Their memorials (with the exception of Rootsweb which provides no way to make a correction) are now listed in Wadeville Cemetery. There is no point in giving details of the original farm location because a pond now occupies the area on the farm where William and Lydia were originally laid to rest.
DIRECTIONS TO NEW BURIAL LOCATION: Wadeville Cemetery is located on the south side of South Side Drive at Civic #122. An arched sign is visible from South Side Drive. Follow the long laneway from the arched sign to the cemetery.
