In 1657, Sir William Mure wrote in his "Historie and Descent of the House of Rowallane" that Sir Gilchrist Mure (d. 1280) "builded the Mures Ile at Kilmarnock and decored the same with funerall monuments," arranging also for its continued funding. Later, the same writer states that when Sir Gilchrist died, "he was buried with his forfathers in his owne buriell place, the Mures Isle at Kilmarnock," a statement historian James Paterson noted clearly involved an anachronism: "If he was the builder of the Isle, he could not well have been buried with his forefathers unless they had been disinhumed for the purpose," wrote Paterson.
