Add PhotosIn 1813, a group of members of the Society of Friends that had been meeting at Old Kennett erected a new meetinghouse and established a cemetery on a three-acre parcel of land on State Street the borough of Kennett Square. Following the division in the Society of Friends, this meeting was continued as a Hicksite meeting in 1827. Members of the Orthodox sect of Old Kennett constructed their own meeting at Parkersville in 1831, while further divisions in the Society of Friends led to the establishment of the Longwood Progressive Friends in 1855.
Portions of the land at and cemetery at State Street were sold off over the years; in 1959, a portion of the cemetery was sold off for the construction of the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library and Post Office; approximately 120 burials were disinterred and relocated to Old Kennett.
Finally, in 2003, the remainder of the cemetery was sold to the Borough of Kennett Square for redevelopment efforts. Following court approval, the remainder of the burials, about 40, were also disinterred and relocated to Old Kennett.
Today, the former site of the cemetery is a parking lot.
