Exact location 38o 6.344' North Latitude and 75o 47.241' West Longitude
Located in a small community known as Upper Fairmount on Maryland Route 361, turning right onto Upper Hill Road for about 2/10 of a mile, to a road called Jim Moore Rd. Turning right again at about 100 ft. to an unimproved private dirt road across a lot and continuing down this road for a distance of about 800 ft. to a small cleared field. This dirt road is a private right away and permission needs to be acquired before interring. This African American Family Cemetery is located on the upper portion of the western part of the tract of land known as Waters River and near the western boundary of a patent called Salem.
The burial ground is well maintained at this time and is still receiving burials.
On Thursday January 7, 2021 Mr. Harold Tilghman Jr. of Salisbury, previously of Upper Hill, Edward M. Smith, and Philip L. Goldsborough visited the above cemetery to photograph and record the burials. Harold gave a list of the people interred in the lot which is part of this record. Also a map or drawing of the patents Waters River and Salem are also included in this record.
Note: Waters River Patent was issued to Col. William Waters, of Virginia on 5 Sept. 1663 for 1280 Acres.
Salem Patent was issued to John Waters of Somerset Co. 25 August 1752 for 490 Acres. The tract called Salem was resurveyed in 1789 by Frances Hutchins Waters, with some vacancies added increasing the acreage to 691 acres. The tract at this point was referred to as Addition to Salem.
