Kilmurry Ballyneale Old Parish Graveyard
Ballyneill, County Tipperary, Ireland
Townlands in the parish included Ballycurkeen, Ballydine, Ballynacloona, Ballynamona, Ballyneill, Ballynoran, Brittas, Butlerstown, Curraghadobbin, Figlash, Lissadober, Macreary, Mullagh & Rathclarish.
The Irish for Kilmurray is Cill Mhuire, which means the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the old church of the parish and the present church in Ballyneale was built to replace it. The church in Kilmurray was built by Conn O' Neill.
The church is seventy two feet in length and twenty two feet in width. There are two entrances to the church. It can be seen from these entrances that the architecture is romanesque (rounded doors and arches), unlike the present church in Ballyneale. The walls are built from limestone and sandstone mixed and cemented with lime and sand mortar. It is believed that the roof of the church was thatched.
There is a very large graveyard around the church which is still in use. The majority of the graves are to be found on the east side of the church (because the the sun rises in the east). There are fewer graves to be found on the west side; it was usually the poor people or the homeless of the parish who were buried at this side. The headstones are much smaller, unlike the larger tombs at the east side. There are a lot of unmarked graves on the west side.
The O' Neills have a family tomb at Kilmurry; it is situated inside the church itself. This tombstone is in the form of a table-tomb of black marble and according to tradition it took five bullocks to draw the slabs from Kilkenny. On the front and side panels of the tomb are carvings representing the passion of Christ and the instruments representing it. The tomb is typical of many such tombs erected in Tipperary and Kilkenny in that period and it appears that the most likely sculptor is Padraig O'Ceirin who carved many similar tombs.
