Add PhotosThis cemetery, which covered lots 849 and 935 in Square 5876 in the Douglass neighborhood of Southeast Washington, was located on the north side of Bruce Place, S.E., between Jasper Place and 12th Place. It was bounded by today's Bruce Gardens apartment complex on the west, today's Jasper Place apartment complex on the east, and Stanton Road on the north. John Hayden Johnson Middle School is directly Bruce Place from the former cemetery grounds today.
This part of Southeast Washington was also referred to, interchangeably, as Hillsdale, Barry Farm, and Stantontown.
The Hillsdale Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1877, and the first mention of this cemetery in the Washington Evening Star newspaper was in the February 12, 1890 obituary of 95-year-old Charles Toney who was buried there. The earliest burial in this cemetery listed on Ancestry.com was that of 1-year-old Eddie Douglass, who died on March 13, 1879 and was buried the next day.
This cemetery received burials from Campbell AME Church, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Hillsdale Station AME Church, and other African-American churches in the area.
An article about the tax status of the Hillsdale Cemetery Association in the November 24, 1974 edition of the Evening Star newspaper stated that all bodies that had been buried in this cemetery were disinterred in March of 1967 and re-interred in either a city plot at Blue Plains or at Harmony Memorial Park in Landover, Maryland. The article further stated that burials in this cemetery had taken place as early as 1850 and had ceased around 1910.
