Add PhotosEast Looe was created within Pendryn manor in the parish of St Martin while West Looe Porthvean was created in the manor of Portlooe in Talland.
East Looe was built on a sand spit alongside the present river. It was actually a planned town - planned to a grid of streets. The houses on the four parellel streets were timber fronted but had stone walls for fire prevention. Later frontages were built on some of these old houses so it is not immediately apparent now what an old town East Looe actually is.
East Looe is basically flat while West Looe is built into a steep hillside.
During the 16th century East Looe expanded along the river bank and became one of Cornwall's major harbours. West Looe remained small and dependant largely on fishing.
The earliest Quaker burying ground was in West Looe but one was opened in East Looe in 1718. The first burial was Phillip Debell.
I can find no record of the location of the East Looe Burial Ground.
