Tomb of Father Laval
Sainte-Croix
Port Louis
Mauritius
Sainte-Croix is a suburb of the capital city, Port Louis, in Mauritius, an independent island in the Indian Ocean. It is most famous for its association with the Roman Catholic Blessed Father Jacques-Désiré Laval, who worked in Sainte-Croix as a missionary from 1841 until his death in 1864.
Father Laval is interred near the old Church of Sainte-Croix, and this shrine is thus a place of pilgrimage. The remains of the priest rest in a massive modern stone vault and is an object of great respect to the Mauritians of all ethnicities combined. A colored plaster effigy of the priest is on top of the tomb. It's been rubbed smooth by miracle-seeking pilgrims. A few other smaller tombs are in this area, too.
In the shrine complex is the tomb area; a large, modern church ("L'eglise Père Laval" or "Church of Father Laval"); and a small museum with a permanent exhibition of Père Laval's robe, mitre, letters, and photographs. Also, in close proximity, a convent, a Roman Catholic school, and a Roman Catholic formation center. This new church was built to replace the original one and was consecrated in 1968.
