Add PhotosBijou Community Scattering Garden is a small site created before 1990 by a nonprofit organization serving the poor in El Paso County, Colorado. It contains the cremains of several homeless people and their friends.
Bijou Community dedicated the columbarium in 1993 at one of its housing projects near downtown Colorado Springs, to be used specifically for the remains and in memory of those who died without a place to call home.
In November 2022, after the house was sold, the original components of the scattering garden and cremains were moved to the Colorado Springs–owned Evergreen Cemetery, which had a small area on its grounds that Bijou Community could use.
Community members come together annually on December 21 for the Longest Night vigil to remember homeless people who have died locally in the previous year. The cremains of those who don't have a resting place are interred here.
Directions: Go to Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Expy., Colorado Springs. Drive through the entrance gate to the right of the office, and after a few feet, the semicircular plot backed by a low stone wall is on your right.
