Ascencion Cemetery is the paupers' cemetery for El Paso County, located in Horizon City near Agua Dulce Colonia. By 2005, the County started using Ascencion when McGill County Cemetery ran out of space. The 5-acre cemetery is located 28 miles east of downtown El Paso.
The cemetery is used for El Paso County residents whose families cannot afford to bury them and for unidentified persons.
For financial reasons, the County requires indigent adults to be cremated. This does not apply to children under the age of 18 years, to unknowns (Jane Doe and John Doe), or for deceased individuals whose families object to the practice of cremation.
Adult burials started in Section 1 in the corner of the cemetery closest to High Campus Road. The first burials for children were held in the far corner of the cemetery furthest away from High Campus Road. Burials take place in sequential order of the date of death.
The cemetery is maintained by the County's Road and Bridge Department.
