Add PhotosAccording to Butler, the burial ground was given in 1706 to Thomas Lower ( Loveday's nephew) and by him to Friends in 1717. Today, the site is marked by 2 benches and a roadside plaque with a grasses area on a stretch of remaining boundary wall, which has Listed status. The graveyard was covered by about 2 metres of soil.
The plaque commemorates the donation of the land as a graveyard; it says:
"The land for this burial ground was given by Richard Edgecumbe, Esquire, of Mount Edgecumbe Park, to Thomas Lower by deed dated the 6th day of 8th mo, 1706 and transferred by Thomas Lower to Trustees by deed dated 12th day of 1st month 1717."
"Thomas Lower became a member of the Society of Friends after visiting George Fox when he was imprisoned in Pendennis castle Falmouth. "
At a meeting in 1717 it was agreed that all the gravestones should be removed but that of Daniel Eliot, died 1711, survived.
The burial ground at Tregongeeves was acquired in about 1970 by the local council for road widening. ( A 390). The burials (dating back to 1664) and the gravestones were moved to the burial ground at St Austell.
In c.1970, some 40 Tregongeeves headstones were moved to the St Austell Quaker Burying Ground in High Cross Street , (plot 70 on the burial plan ). All of the gravestones there (about 74 in total), including those from Tregongeeves, have since been moved along the outer walls of the building as well as the northwest boundary wall.
In 1752 England changed from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar. This may have caused riots at the time when the country "lost" eleven days that September but it has certainly caused confusion with dates that year ever since. It was quite usual to refer to the " fourth month " and before 1752 this was June and afterwards it became April. The legal New Year moved from March 25th to January 1st. The new dates start with the 1st January 1752.
I have used the current calendar throughout for dates.
