Add PhotosThe Convent of San Francisco, also known as the 'Convento Grande de San Francisco,' stands as the sole surviving structure from a vast church and monastery complex in Mexico City's historic center. Founded by the first Franciscan friars in New Spain, it played a significant role in the colonial era. Over time, the complex witnessed historical events, including hosting Hernán Cortés's funeral and sheltering individuals during periods of political turmoil.
After the Reform War, much of the monastery was demolished for road construction. Today, remnants exist as a Methodist church, a bakery, and integrated fragments in other establishments.
The current San Francisco Church, the third on this site, was built between 1710 and 1716 due to sinking caused by Mexico City's soft soil. Notable features include the Balvanera Chapel's entrance, an 18th-century altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and a reconstructed gilded altar in the main church. While parts have undergone significant changes, the cloister on Gante Street remains well-preserved and accessible by prior authorization.
