In 1821 a Land Grant of 1650 acres was given to Darcy Wentworth to be called Peterborough, including the site of the private town. Darcy Wentworth reserved a portion of the land for a cemetery. The Old Peterborough Cemetery operated between the 1820's– 1890's. Peterborough became known as Shellharbour and a Caravan Park is now situated on the old cemetery site.

In the 1950's skeletons and headstones were removed from the old cemetery. Some of these were moved to other local cemeteries including Shellharbour Cemetery which became operational from 1897.

There is an Historical plaque erected by Shellharbour Council in the grounds of Shellharbour Caravan Park where the old cemetery was situated, depicting the pioneers of that Cemetery.
