Established in 1913 by Joe King and Wong Yen, the Old Chinese Cemetery ☘城舊華人安息ᙐ was the first of two cemeteries created by the Chinese American community in the city of Greenville, in the Mississippi Delta region. The land where the cemetery was built was purchased from H.L. Wells from what is now the Wells-Boone Funeral Home of Greenville. The wooded area across from the Old Chinese Cemetery is the site of a long abandoned pauper's cemetery. Joe King and Wong Yen also established the Chinese Cemetery Association of Greenville.
In 1931, a larger cemetery, the New Chinese Cemetery ☘城新華人安息ᙐ, was established on Crescent Street, near Main Street (approximately 160 Crescent Street), by Frank Chu Lin of the Chinese Cemetery Association. The Old Cemetery was closed, and the Chinese began relocating tombs from the Old to the New cemeteries. Thus, in the front of the cemetery, there is a row of empty tombs and concrete bases where tombstones were once located. The earliest tombstones in the New Cemetery are believed to have been moved from the Old Cemetery. However, the Cemetery Association stopped when they reached the enclosed tomb of a mother and child in the center of the cemetery, and they also left the tombs behind it alone, where they remain today.
In 1947, then president of the Chinese Cemetery Association, Frank Chu Lin, completed a restoration of the Old Chinese Cemetery, including the modern gate to the cemetery. In 2008, an official Mississippi state historic marker was dedicated, and though the cemetery is closed, it is still maintained by the Chinese Cemetery Association of Greenville to this day.
