"Sutherland Burial Plot, on the Thomas farm, three miles from Chatham, between that place and Chatham Centre, Columbia County, New York. The farm was originally owned by the Sutherlands, and then by the Harris family, from whom, in 1867 it was purchased by Elijah McCall Thomas. The farm is now [in 1920] owned by James Thomas and Ella Thomas of Troy. The burial plot is very inaccessible, it being in a grove of trees about a hundred yards west of the farm-house. The trees and bushes are so thick that it was with great difficulty that the stones were copied. Part of the footstones were copied, but no pains were taken to get all of them. All the tomb-stones that were readable, however, were copied. They are given verbatim, including punctuation and lack of it. Copied August 9, 1920 by Milton Thomas of Troy."
