Add PhotosIn 1935, the Mill Hill Sisters, from England, opened a receiving house in Ballymascanlan, named Mount Oliver Convent, for postulants from Ireland, due to large numbers of young Irish women entering the order. The Sisters' new missionary endeavour in East Africa, resulted in a break from Mill Hill and establish a new congregation. Mill Hill Abbey needed sisters for their Schools in England and the American mission.
On June 9, 1952, the new Congregation named Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa was established at Mount Oliver Convent. Mother Kevin was the first Superior General and Mount Oliver Convent became the Motherhouse.
The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa work in Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and journey on in the spirit of Mother Kevin.
The cemetery is located adjacent to the original motherhouse for the congregation. Today, the convent also doubles as the Saint Francis Nursing Home (Mount Oliver).
