Like most cities of the time, in Zaragoza the corpses were buried inside the churches, in the cemeteries or graves that the parishes had outside of them and in the convents and monasteries. The Royal and General Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Gracia had a cemetery in which all those patients who died in the Hospital were buried and who did not have their own grave or their identity was unknown. Due to the precarious hygiene that this caused, in 1789, the lack of spaces and the administration of burials became evident in Zaragoza. Finally in 1790, the work of a new space for the hospital was carried out under the directives of the Marqués de Ayerbe, which would be inaugurated in 1791. In 1804, a circular was promulgated that prohibited burying in churches and forced the construction of cemeteries outside the city walls. This cemetery of Nuestra Señora de Gracia Hospital is the one that became the provisional cemetery of Zaragoza in 1814. This provisionality lasted until September of 1823.
Currently, La Cartuja Cemetery is owned by the Zaragoza Provincial Council.
The Cartuja Baja cemetery is much closer to the center of Zaragoza than that of the Cartuja Baja. It is on the Castellón N-232 road in front of the San Carlos polygon. The entrance pavilions and the chapel are of artistic interest.
Cartuja Baja Cemetery is the oldest active cemetery in Zaragoza. The Torrero Cemetery was inaugurated more than forty years later.
